For most crew T-shirts, DTF is the better fit. It prints full-color logos, small text and large back designs on lightweight shirts without stiff stitching. Embroidery is best for polos, caps and jackets, where a raised, stitched logo looks dressier. Many businesses use DTF for everyday crew tees and embroidery for a few dress pieces.
How are DTF and embroidery different?
DTF (direct-to-film) prints your logo onto a film with full-color and white inks, then heat-presses it onto the shirt. The print is a thin, flexible layer that can reproduce gradients, fine detail and every color in your logo.
Embroidery stitches your logo into the fabric with thread. Before stitching, the logo is converted into a stitch file, a step usually called digitizing. The result is raised and textured, with a classic, dressy look.
Which looks more professional?
It depends on the garment. On a polo, a cap or a jacket, an embroidered logo looks polished and traditional. On a crew T-shirt, a crisp DTF print often looks cleaner, because heavy stitching can pull and pucker lightweight fabric. For logos with gradients, photos or many colors, DTF shows the logo the way it was designed, while embroidery has to simplify it into thread colors.
Which handles detailed logos and small text better?
DTF. It can print small lettering, thin lines, phone numbers and websites that thread can't reproduce cleanly. Very small text is hard to stitch, and fine details tend to blur together in embroidery. If your logo has a tagline or a license number, DTF keeps it readable.
Which lasts longer?
Embroidery is extremely durable and handles harsh industrial washing well. DTF also holds up through many washes when it's pressed correctly and the shirts are washed inside out and dried on low. For crews that wash their own shirts at home, both last well. Our post on whether DTF prints are good for work shirts goes deeper on durability.
Which is more comfortable in Texas heat?
For T-shirts, DTF usually wins. A left-chest DTF logo is light and flexible. A large embroidered design adds weight and stiff backing that can feel scratchy against the skin on a hot day. If you want a big back print for visibility, DTF keeps the shirt light, and designs with some open space breathe better than one solid block of ink.
How does the cost compare?
Embroidery is often priced by stitch count, and many shops charge a digitizing fee for a new logo. Large embroidered designs add up quickly. DTF has no digitizing step, and a big back print costs far less to add than a big embroidered design.
Our crew packs include a front and back print at no extra charge: 12 shirts for $155.88, 24 for $311.76, 50 for $649.50, and 100 for $1,299.
Which is better for hoodies and sweatshirts?
Both can work. Embroidery looks great on a thick hoodie or crewneck, and the heavier fabric supports the stitching well. DTF is the better pick when you want a large back print, a full-color logo, or names on each piece, because it prints big designs without adding weight. For cool-weather crew orders, many businesses match their DTF tees with DTF hoodies or sweatshirts so the logo looks the same across the whole crew.
Can you combine DTF and embroidery?
Yes, and many businesses do. A common setup is DTF crew tees for the field team, with a few embroidered polos or caps for owners, sales staff or client meetings. Using the same logo files and colors keeps the look consistent across both.
Frequently asked questions
Can DTF do a left-chest logo?
Yes. A left-chest logo is one of the most common DTF placements, and it pairs well with a large back print that shows your business name and phone number.
Is embroidery better for hats?
Usually, yes. Embroidery is the traditional choice for structured caps. DTF can work on some hats, but it's at its best on shirts, hoodies and sweatshirts.
Does DTF crack on work shirts?
Not when it's pressed correctly and cared for. Wash shirts inside out, skip bleach, and tumble dry on low. Most early cracking comes from poor pressing or high dryer heat.
