Yes—DTF printing is better than screen printing for most small orders. Direct-to-film (DTF) skips the costly screen-making and setup associated with screen printing, so orders from one shirt through roughly 50 shirts can stay practical. Screen printing can become the better choice when you are repeating the same simple design across a much larger run.
Why DTF fits small runs
With DTF, your artwork is printed onto transfer film, finished with powder and curing, then heat-pressed onto the garment. The process does not require a separate screen for each color, which makes it useful for one-off shirts, small batches, team shirts, event apparel, and changing names or details.
DTF also handles full-color artwork, gradients, fine details, and multiple colors without turning a small order into a large setup project. It works for custom DTF shirts, crew packs, and ready-to-press DTF transfers or gang sheets.
When screen printing may win
Screen printing can be economical for large repeats of the same design, especially when the artwork uses only a few solid colors. Once the setup is spread across a high quantity, its per-shirt cost can become attractive. For a short run, however, screen setup, color separation, and minimum quantities may make the process less convenient.
DTF vs. screen printing
- Small quantity: DTF is usually the more practical option.
- Full-color or detailed art: DTF offers more flexibility.
- One repeated design at high volume: Screen printing may offer better unit economics.
- Different designs or personalization: DTF avoids rebuilding multiple screens.
- Customer-supplied blanks: DTF transfers can be ordered separately for application to compatible garments.
What small orders cost
Pricing depends on the garment, print size, quantity, and whether you want a finished shirt or a transfer. As a reference, LuxPort lists single DTF transfers from $3.99–$8.99 by size, large 12-inch transfers at $9.99, $12.99, or $16.99, and 12-inch gang sheets from $9.99–$129.99. Finished custom shirt singles are listed at $24.99. Crew-pack pricing includes 12 shirts at $155.88, 24 at $311.76, 50 at $649.50, and 100 at $1,299.
