T-Shirt Printing in San Antonio: A Buyer's Guide Before You Order

October 23, 2026Pablo

The best way to buy t-shirt printing in San Antonio is to decide four things first: how many shirts you need, how many colors and names the design has, what shirt you want it printed on, and when you need it. Those answers tell you which print method fits (DTF, screen printing, vinyl, or DTG), and they let any shop give you an accurate quote and a proof before printing.

This buyer's guide walks through each decision in plain language, so you can compare shops fairly and avoid the usual surprises: blurry art, wrong sizes, and a design that looked great on a phone but not on a shirt. For details on how ordering works with our team, see our custom t-shirts in San Antonio page.

Step 1: Know your quantity

Quantity drives almost everything in t-shirt printing.

  • 1 to 10 shirts: birthday shirts, a memorial for close family, a gift. You want a method with no screens or setup, which usually means DTF.
  • 10 to 50 shirts: a team, a crew, a reunion, a church group. DTF is usually the most flexible, especially with names. Our guide to ordering 10 to 50 shirts covers this range.
  • Hundreds of the same one- or two-color design: screen printing can make sense at that volume. We are honest about this in what printing method is best for 500 shirts.

Step 2: Match the print method to the design

DTF (direct-to-film)

Full color, photos, gradients, small text, and different names on each shirt, on cotton, polyester, or blends, light or dark. This is what LuxPort Print Co prints for most orders. Read what DTF printing is and how it works for the full explanation.

Screen printing

Ink pushed through a mesh screen, one screen per color. Very economical for large runs of simple designs, less so for small orders or many colors.

Heat transfer vinyl

Cut and weeded vinyl sheets. Good for a single name or number and specialty finishes like glitter. See is DTF vinyl? for how it compares.

DTG (direct-to-garment)

Ink printed straight into the shirt. Soft on light cotton, more limited on dark shirts and polyester.

Step 3: Pick the shirt itself

The blank shirt matters as much as the print. Ask about:

  • Fabric: 100% cotton feels classic; cotton-poly blends are softer and shrink less; polyester performance shirts breathe in Texas heat.
  • Fit: unisex, women's, youth, and toddler sizes fit differently. Check a size chart for each style.
  • Color: some colors look different on screen than in person. Heathers, maroon, and navy are common surprises.

Our post on shirt brands and blanks that work well with DTF goes into more detail.

Step 4: Get your artwork ready

Good art makes a good shirt. In order of preference, send:

  1. A vector file (AI, SVG, EPS, or a vector PDF).
  2. A large PNG with a transparent background, ideally sized at print size and 300 DPI.
  3. A high-resolution photo, if the design is a photo.

If all you have is a sketch, a screenshot, or an idea, that is fine. Many shops, including ours, can help turn it into print-ready art. See what file format is best for t-shirt printing for the details.

Step 5: Always approve a proof

A proof is a mockup showing your design on the shirt, with its size and placement. Check spelling, dates, phone numbers, colors, and the size list before you approve. Our 8-point proof checklist makes this easy.

Step 6: Plan your timeline and delivery

Start early, especially for events with a fixed date like a funeral, a cruise, a reunion, or a company event. Ask any shop for their current timeline when you request a quote, because it changes with the season and order size. LuxPort Print Co ships orders nationwide, and local delivery is available within our San Antonio area for eligible orders. Ask if your order qualifies; it is not available for every order.

Local San Antonio printer or a national website?

Both can work. The differences show up when something needs a human answer.

What a local print team adds

  • A real conversation about your art. If a logo is blurry or a photo is dark, someone tells you before printing instead of after.
  • Help with messy group orders. Mixed sizes, youth and adult shirts, names on the back, and late additions are easier to sort out with a team you can call.
  • Local context. A San Antonio team knows what Fiesta, a summer reunion at a park, or a jobsite in August asks of a shirt.

What to check with any website

  • Whether a person reviews your file, or it prints exactly as uploaded.
  • Whether you see a proof first.
  • What shirt brand you are actually getting.
  • How reprints are handled if something prints wrong.

Whichever you choose, ask the same questions and compare the answers side by side. A clear, honest answer to "what happens if something is wrong?" tells you a lot about a shop.

Questions to ask any San Antonio t-shirt printer

  • What print method will you use for my design, and why?
  • Which shirt brand and fabric are included in the quote?
  • Will I see a proof before you print?
  • Can each shirt have a different name or number?
  • Is the back print included, or extra?
  • How do I get the shirts: shipping or local delivery?

Common buyer mistakes to avoid

Comparing quotes that are not the same

One quote may include a premium shirt and a back print; another may be a basic shirt with a front print only. Compare the shirt, the print locations, and the number of colors, not just the bottom line.

Designing on a phone at full zoom

A design that looks great zoomed in can be tiny on a real shirt. Ask for a mockup at actual print size.

Collecting sizes too late

The most common delay on group orders is waiting for sizes. Collect them in one spreadsheet before you request the final quote.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best t-shirt printing method for small orders in San Antonio?

For small orders, especially with full-color art or different names, DTF printing is usually the most flexible because it has no screens or per-color setup.

Can I order just one custom t-shirt?

Yes. DTF printing makes single shirts and small batches practical. Request a quote with your design and size.

What file should I send for t-shirt printing?

A vector file (AI, SVG, EPS, or vector PDF) or a large transparent PNG at 300 DPI is best. If you only have a sketch or a photo, send it and ask for design help.

Do I get a proof before my shirts are printed?

With LuxPort Print Co, yes. You approve a proof showing the design, size, and placement before anything is printed.

Can I get shirts printed on the front and back?

Yes. Front, back, and sleeve prints are all options. Tell us every print location you want so the quote includes them.
