What Should Welding and Metal Fabrication Shop Shirts Look Like in San Antonio?

October 23, 2026Pablo

Welding and metal fabrication shop shirts work best when they are dark, simple, and built around a strong back print: your shop logo on the left chest, your shop name and services big on the back, and the welder's first name on the front. That layout tells a customer, a general contractor, or a gate inspector who you are from across a job site. Just as important, the printed shirts are for the office, the shop floor away from the arc, deliveries, and events, while hot work stays in the flame-resistant gear your safety program calls for.

This guide is for San Antonio welding shops, mobile welders, ornamental iron and gate builders, trailer builders, and structural steel and fabrication companies. It covers what to print, where to put it, which colors hold up to shop grime, how to handle names, and how to order without mix-ups.

Who needs welding and fabrication shop shirts?

San Antonio has a lot of steel work going on: new homes and commercial builds on the far West Side and along Loop 1604, ranch gates and pipe fence across the Hill Country, trailer and truck builds, and repair work for oilfield and farm equipment. Every one of those jobs puts your crew in front of someone deciding whether to hire you again. Shirts help in a few clear ways:

  • Mobile welders show up at homes, ranches, and job sites. A shirt with the company name puts customers at ease before the truck door even closes.
  • Fabrication shops get walk-throughs from contractors and buyers. A crew in matching shirts looks organized.
  • Ornamental iron and gate companies meet homeowners face to face, and a name on the chest makes the visit friendlier.
  • Trailer and custom truck builders sell at meets, shows, and rodeo grounds, where shop shirts double as merch.

What should a welding shop shirt say?

Front of the shirt

Keep the front small and clean. A left chest logo is the standard, and it sits where a name badge would. Our guide on where to place a left chest logo gives the measurements. Many shops add the welder's first name on the right chest, which is a nice touch for customer-facing crews.

Back of the shirt

The back is where the shop name does its work. A strong back print usually has:

  • The shop name, big and bold
  • Two or three services, like Structural Steel, Gates and Fencing, Mobile Repair
  • A phone number or website
  • A simple graphic if it fits your brand, such as a weld bead, an arc, or a torch

Our posts on front vs. back logos on work shirts and adding phone numbers and websites to work shirts go deeper on layout. If your crew works on big sites, read how to design a back print that reads from the street.

Sleeve prints

A small sleeve print is a good spot for a certification line your shop actually holds, a year established, or a short slogan. See ideas for a shirt sleeve print. Only list certifications your welders really have; customers and inspectors may ask.

Can you weld in a DTF printed shirt?

This is the most important question on this page, so here is a straight answer. Custom printed cotton and cotton-blend t-shirts are not flame-resistant clothing. For welding, cutting, and grinding near sparks, follow your company's safety program and OSHA guidance, which usually means flame-resistant shirts or jackets, leathers, and the right gloves and hood. Synthetic fabrics such as polyester can melt when hit by sparks, so they are a poor choice near hot work no matter what is printed on them.

Where printed shirts fit is everything around the hot work:

  • Front office and estimating staff
  • Shop helpers, drivers, and delivery crews
  • Job site walks, bids, and customer meetings
  • Under or alongside the FR gear, if your safety program allows it
  • Trade shows, rodeo booths, and community events
  • Shirts you give or sell to loyal customers

Do not add a print to a flame-resistant garment unless the garment maker says decorations are allowed. A print can change how FR fabric performs, so that decision belongs with the garment maker and your safety lead, not the print shop.

Which shirt colors work best for a fab shop?

Dark shirts win in a shop. Black, charcoal, and navy hide grinding dust, rust, mill scale, and the gray smudges that come from handling steel all day. Our guide on shirt colors that hide dirt for work crews compares the options.

For the print, pick a color that pops against the shirt. White and safety orange are popular on black, and yellow reads well on navy. DTF prints a white layer under colors on dark shirts, so bright inks stay bright. For contrast tips, see which shirt colors make a logo stand out.

What kind of shirt holds up in a welding shop?

Fab shops are hard on clothes. A few things help shirts last:

  • Heavier cotton. A thicker shirt stands up better to snags and rough handling. Our post on the best shirt weight for work shirts explains the choices.
  • Long sleeves for cooler months. They add a layer of coverage on the shop floor in winter.
  • Hot weather options. San Antonio summers are brutal in a metal building. See t-shirts for hot weather crews.
  • Sweatshirts for winter. Many shops add a hoodie or crewneck for cold mornings; DTF on sweatshirts covers how that works.

Wash shirts inside out and skip high heat in the dryer so the print lasts. The full care steps are in how to wash custom printed shirts.

How many shirts does each welder need?

A common plan is enough shirts for a full work week so nobody shows up in a stained or missing shirt. Shops that do dirty grinding work often want a few extra per person. Our guide on how many uniform shirts each employee should get walks through the numbers, and why to order a few extras covers new hires and replacements.

Adding each welder's name

Names are one of the easiest upgrades for a crew shirt. DTF can print a different name on every shirt in the same order, so there is no extra setup for each person. Send a simple list with each name next to its size. Our post on adding employee names to company shirts shows how to format it, and how to collect sizes for a bulk order helps you gather sizes from the crew without chasing everyone down.

Shirts for events, customers, and shop merch

Many welding and trailer shops sell or give away shirts with a bolder design at truck meets, livestock shows, rodeo booths, and trade shows. Customers who like your work often want to wear it. You can keep the crew shirt clean and simple, and make the merch shirt bigger and louder with the same logo. Polos are also a good fit for owners and estimators who meet with contractors; see whether DTF transfers can go on polo shirts. If your crew also works around traffic on job sites, read DTF on safety vests and hi-vis shirts.

How to order welding shop shirts without mix-ups

  1. Send your logo. A clear, high-quality file works best. If you only have a sign photo or a business card, Have LuxPort Design It can rebuild it.
  2. Pick print spots. Left chest, back, and any sleeve or name prints.
  3. Choose shirt colors. One color for the crew, or a second color for the office or events.
  4. Build the size and name list. One line per person: name, size, and shirt style.
  5. Approve the proof. Check spelling, phone numbers, and service names before printing.

Frequently asked questions

What should welding shop shirts have on them?

Most welding and fabrication shops put a small logo on the left chest and a larger back print with the shop name, the main services (such as structural steel, gates, trailers, or mobile welding), and a phone number or website. Adding each welder's first name on the chest makes it easy for customers and general contractors to know who they are talking to.

Can DTF printed shirts be worn while welding?

DTF printed cotton or cotton-blend shirts are best for shop floor work away from the arc, the front office, deliveries, job site walks, trade shows, and events. For hot work, follow your safety program and wear the flame-resistant clothing it calls for. Do not add a print to flame-resistant garments unless the garment maker says decorations are allowed, because a print can change how the fabric performs.

What shirt color is best for a welding or fabrication crew?

Dark colors like black, charcoal, and navy hide grinding dust, rust, and shop grime better than light colors. A bright print color on a dark shirt, such as white, orange, or safety yellow, keeps the shop name easy to read from across a yard.

Can each welder's name go on their shirt?

Yes. DTF printing can put a different name on every shirt in the same order, so every crew member gets their own shirt without setting up a separate run. Send a list with each name next to its shirt size.

Can a fabrication shop order shirts for customers and events too?

Yes. Many shops order a second set with a bolder design for trade shows, car and truck meets, rodeo booths, and customers who ask for shop merch. The same logo file can be used for both the crew shirts and the event shirts.
