No. At LuxPort, adding more colors to your design does not raise the price. Our custom T-shirts are $24.99 with a front print and $29.99 with a front and back print, whether the design is a one-color logo or a full-color photo. Our DTF transfers and gang sheets are priced by size, not by how many colors are in the art. What can change the price is how big the print is, whether you add a back print, or how much gang sheet length you use.
That surprises a lot of people, because the old rule of thumb for printed shirts was "every color costs extra." That rule comes from screen printing, where each color needs its own screen and its own pass on the press. DTF (direct-to-film) printing works differently, so the pricing works differently too. This guide explains why color count doesn't move the price on DTF, where your real costs come from, and why you should send your full-color art exactly as you designed it. We print in-house in San Antonio and ship nationwide, and this is one of the questions we hear most from crews, families, teachers, and small businesses before they order.
Why do people think more colors cost more?
Because for decades, most shirt shops quoted screen printing. In screen printing, a separate mesh screen is made for each color in the design. A one-color logo needs one screen. A four-color design needs four screens, four ink setups, and four passes on every shirt. More colors meant more labor and more setup, so shops charged per color, and many still do for screen-printed jobs.
If you have ever gotten a quote that said something like "front, 3 colors" or seen a price chart with columns for 1 color, 2 colors, 3 colors and up, that is screen-print pricing. It makes sense for that method. It just doesn't carry over to DTF.
How DTF printing handles color
DTF printing prints your whole design onto a special film in one pass, using a printer that lays down all the colors at once, much like a photo printer does on paper. A white ink layer goes behind the colors so they stay bright on dark shirts, then an adhesive powder is applied and cured. The finished transfer is heat-pressed onto the shirt.
The key point for pricing: the printer doesn't care whether your file has two colors or two thousand. A sunset gradient, a family photo, and a plain black logo all go through the same process. There are no per-color screens to make, so there's nothing per-color to charge for. If you want the full background on what DTF can reproduce, our post on how many colors a DTF shirt design can have covers the capability side. This post sticks to the price question.
What a full-color shirt costs at LuxPort
Our custom T-shirt page has three choices: shirt color, adult size (S through 3XL), and print location. There is no option for how many colors are in your design, because it doesn't affect the price. Here's how it breaks down, checked on the live product page today:
| Your design | Front only | Front + back |
|---|---|---|
| One-color text or logo | $24.99 | $29.99 |
| Two- or three-color logo | $24.99 | $29.99 |
| Full-color illustration or gradient | $24.99 | $29.99 |
| Photo print | $24.99 | $29.99 |
Same price across the board. The shirt color you pick (white, black, gray, navy, or red on that product) doesn't change it either, and neither does the size. If you'd rather lay the design out yourself, the Design Your Own Custom T-Shirt page follows the same $24.99 front and $29.99 front + back pricing.
What a full-color DTF transfer costs
If you press your own shirts, hats, bags, or hoodies, you're buying transfers instead of finished shirts. Transfers are priced by size tier, and color count still doesn't matter. Here are the live tiers for our single DTF transfer:
| Transfer size | Price |
|---|---|
| Up to 2 × 2 inches | $3.99 |
| Up to 5 × 5 inches | $4.99 |
| Up to 8 × 8 inches | $5.99 |
| Up to 10 × 10 inches | $6.99 |
| Up to 12 × 12 inches | $7.99 |
| Up to 13 × 13 inches | $8.99 |
A 10 × 10 inch transfer is $6.99 whether it's a single-color outline or a full-color photo collage. Our large 12-inch DTF transfers work the same way: $7.99 for 12 × 10, $9.99 for 12 × 12, and $14.99 for 12 × 18 inches, with no color surcharge.
Gang sheets: priced by length, not by color
A gang sheet lets you fill a 12-inch-wide sheet with as many designs as fit. Our 12-inch gang sheet builder runs from $9.99 for a 12 × 12 sheet up to $129.99 for 12 × 240 inches. You can mix a black-only logo, a full-color mascot, and a photo on the same sheet, and the price is still set only by the sheet length you choose. That makes gang sheets a good fit for multicolor designs: you pay for the space, not the palette.
Where color can affect your cost (indirectly)
Color count itself is never a line item, but a few choices that often come along with colorful designs can change what you spend:
- Print size. A big, detailed full-color design is often printed larger so the detail shows. On transfers, a larger size means a higher tier. On finished shirts, size doesn't change the price. Our post on whether print size changes the price walks through those tiers in detail.
- Adding a back print. A front + back shirt is $29.99 instead of $24.99, a $5 difference for the second location. That's a location choice, not a color choice.
- More gang sheet length. If you put many large color designs on a gang sheet, you may need a longer sheet. The price goes up with length, not with the number of colors.
In other words, if your price changes, look at size, location, and quantity. Color won't be the reason.
Should I simplify my design to save money?
No, not for DTF. Stripping a design down to one or two colors won't lower your price with us, and it can make the shirt look worse. Send your art in full color, the way you meant it to look.
There are good reasons to simplify a design, but price isn't one of them on DTF. Simplify when it helps the shirt read better: fewer tiny details for a small left-chest logo, bolder text so a back print can be read across a parking lot, or more contrast so a dark design doesn't disappear on a black shirt. Those are design calls, and the proof is where you check them. Every order comes with a proof you approve before we print, so you'll see how your colors sit on the shirt before anything is pressed.
A note on colors looking a little different on fabric
Your screen glows; a shirt doesn't. Very bright neons and some deep, saturated colors can look a bit softer on fabric than they do on a phone. That doesn't cost extra or change the price, but it's worth knowing before you approve your proof. If an exact brand color matters to you, tell us when you order.
How to send multicolor artwork so it prints well
Since color is included, the best thing you can do is send a file that lets every color come through:
- Use a high-resolution file. A large PNG or the original export from your design app works best. Avoid screenshots and heavily compressed images from social media.
- Use a transparent background when you don't want a box. A JPG with a white background will print as a white rectangle on a dark shirt. A transparent PNG prints only the design.
- Keep gradients and photos at full quality. Smooth color blends need enough pixels to stay smooth when printed at shirt size.
- Don't convert to fewer colors "for printing." Some online guides tell you to reduce colors for screen printing. You don't need to do that for DTF.
Is DTF the right method for a colorful San Antonio order?
For most small and mid-size orders with colorful art, yes. DTF shines when your design has lots of colors, photos, gradients, or fine detail, and when you want each shirt to look the same without paying setup for every color. That's why it works well for family reunion photo shirts, cruise group shirts, memorial shirts, school spirit shirts, and small business logos with several brand colors.
If you're ordering for a crew or team, our business crew shirt packages follow the same idea: the design can be as colorful as your logo needs. Frequently asked questions
Does a full-color shirt cost more than a one-color shirt?
Not at LuxPort. A custom T-shirt is $24.99 with a front print or $29.99 with front and back, no matter how many colors are in the design.
Is there a per-color charge on DTF transfers?
No. Our DTF transfers are priced by size tier only. A single transfer runs from $3.99 (up to 2 × 2 inches) to $8.99 (up to 13 × 13 inches), and a full-color design costs the same as a one-color design at the same size.
Why does screen printing charge by color and DTF doesn't?
Screen printing needs a separate screen and press pass for each color, so more colors mean more setup and labor. DTF prints all colors in one pass onto film, so the number of colors doesn't add setup.
Does a photo cost more to print than a logo?
No. A photo and a logo printed in the same location on the same shirt are the same price. For transfers, they're the same price at the same size.
Does shirt color change the price?
Not on our custom T-shirt. White, black, gray, navy, and red are all the same price on that product, at every adult size from S to 3XL.
Can I put several multicolor designs on one gang sheet?
Yes. A gang sheet is priced by its length, from $9.99 for 12 × 12 inches up to $129.99 for 12 × 240 inches, so you can mix one-color and full-color designs on the same sheet without any color surcharge.
Should I reduce my design to fewer colors before sending it?
No. Send your design in full color. Reducing colors won't lower the price for DTF, and it may make the print look less like what you designed. Simplify only if it helps readability, and check that on your proof.
