How Do I Lay Out a Christmas Gang Sheet With a Name for Every Family Member?

October 22, 2026Pablo

To lay out a Christmas gang sheet with a name for every family member, build one finished piece per person, either the full Christmas design with that person's name already in it or one shared design plus a separate name strip for each person, then stack everything on a single 12-inch-wide layout with about 1/4 inch between designs. Size each name for the shirt it is going on (adult, youth, toddler), group small pieces side by side to save space, add up the heights to choose a sheet length, and check spelling on every name before you upload. At LuxPort, a 12 x 24 gang sheet is $17.99 and fits a stack of six or seven name strips.

A family Christmas shirt with everyone's name on it is one of the most popular holiday projects, and it is also one of the easiest to get wrong. Names come in different lengths, kids wear smaller shirts than adults, and one typo can mean Grandma's shirt says the wrong thing in every holiday photo. A gang sheet solves most of that because every name prints together on one sheet of DTF transfers that you cut apart and press at home.

This guide walks through how to plan the layout, how big each name should be, how to fit everything on the shortest sheet, and what it costs. If you are new to gang sheets, start with what a DTF gang sheet is.

Step 1: Make a List of Every Person and Every Shirt

Before you open any design app, write down each family member, the exact spelling of the name you want printed, and what they will wear. A simple list keeps the layout honest:

  • Name as printed: "Abuela," "Tío Ray," "Baby Mia," or a nickname. Our post on printing a family nickname on the back of a shirt has ideas.
  • Shirt size: adult, youth, toddler, or infant. Size decides how wide the name can be.
  • Placement: back of the shirt, front under the design, or a sleeve.
  • Shirt color: name colors need to stand out on the shirt they are going on.

If you have accents or the letter Ñ in a name, type it carefully in your design file and zoom in to confirm it shows. Cousins and in-laws coming late? Leave a little space on the sheet for one or two extra names now so you do not need a second order later.

Step 2: Pick a Layout Style

There are two common ways to put names on family Christmas shirts. Both work well on a gang sheet.

Style A: One finished design per person

Each person gets a complete design with their name built in, like a Christmas tree with "Mom" underneath, or a Santa hat over "Grandpa." You place one full design per person on the sheet. This is the cleanest look because the name and art are lined up perfectly every time, and there is only one piece to press per shirt.

Style B: One shared design plus name strips

Everyone gets the same Christmas design on the front, and each person gets a separate name strip for the back. On the sheet, you repeat the shared design once per shirt, then add a stack of name strips. This saves design time because you only build the art once, and it makes adding a late name easy. It does mean two presses per shirt.

Not sure which one fits your family? Style A is great for photos. Style B is great for big families and for anyone who wants a front design and a back name, similar to a team shirt. For more on mixing logos, names, and numbers, see whether logos, names, and numbers can go on one DTF gang sheet.

Step 3: Size Each Name for the Shirt It Goes On

A name that looks perfect on Dad's shirt can wrap past the side seams on a toddler shirt. Size names by shirt, not by person. These are common starting points, not strict rules:

  • Adult back name: about 9 to 11 inches wide, 2 to 3 inches tall.
  • Youth back name: about 7 to 9 inches wide, 1.5 to 2.5 inches tall.
  • Toddler back name: about 5 to 6 inches wide, 1.5 to 2 inches tall.
  • Name under a front design: usually the same width as the design or a little narrower.

The easiest way to check is to lay a shirt your family already owns flat, measure across the back between the shoulder seams, and keep the name a few inches narrower than that. Our DTF gang sheet sizing and ordering questions post has more on how sheet size relates to print size.

Keep long and short names looking even

"Bo" and "Maximiliano" will never be the same width at the same letter height. Pick one approach and stick with it across the family. Either keep every name the same height and let widths vary, which looks the most consistent from across a room, or cap the width and let long names get a little shorter. Avoid stretching or squishing letters to force a name to fit, since that looks off in photos.

Choose a font that reads from a distance

Thin script fonts look festive on a screen but can lose detail at shirt size, especially on small names. A bold block or rounded font keeps names readable. Our post on which fonts stay readable on a shirt from across the room lists styles that hold up.

Step 4: Arrange Everything on the 12-Inch Width

A LuxPort gang sheet is 12 inches wide, and you choose the length. The goal is to use the width well so the sheet stays as short as possible.

  • Leave about 1/4 inch between designs. The product page asks for this so each piece can be cut apart cleanly.
  • Stack adult names one per row. A 10-inch name uses most of the width on its own.
  • Put small names side by side. Two toddler names about 5.5 inches wide can share one row with a gap between them.
  • Fill leftover corners. Small extras like a snowflake for a sleeve, a gift tag, or a tote bag design can tuck into empty space. See what small designs can fill empty space on a gang sheet.
  • Keep each person's pieces near each other. If Mom's front design and back name sit side by side, they are easier to match up after cutting.

If you would rather not build the full layout yourself, the product page says you can upload your designs and list the sizes and quantities in the layout notes. For general setup tips, see how to prepare artwork for a DTF gang sheet and how many designs can fit on a gang sheet.

Step 5: Do the Math to Pick a Sheet Length

Add up the height of every row, plus about 1/4 inch between rows, then pick the next sheet length up. Here are two example families:

Example 1: Six back names only

Six adult names at about 10 x 2.5 inches, one per row: 6 x 2.5 = 15 inches, plus five gaps of 1/4 inch = 1.25 inches, for about 16.25 inches total. That fits on a 12 x 24 gang sheet ($17.99) with room left for a couple of extra names or small designs.

Example 2: Four adults and two toddlers with Style B

Six front designs at about 9 inches tall, one per row, take about 54 inches plus gaps. Four adult names stack in four rows, and the two toddler names share one row. That is roughly 54 + 10 + 2 = 66 inches before gaps, which points to a 12 x 72 sheet ($44.99). If you shrink the toddler front designs to about 5.5 inches wide, they can share a row too and help keep the length down.

Always measure your own files. These numbers are examples, and your design sizes decide the final length.

Step 6: Check Every Name Before You Upload

The gang sheet product page is clear: we print what you send, and it asks you to check spelling, colors, mirroring, and dimensions before uploading. For a family name sheet, that check matters more than usual:

  1. Read every name out loud, letter by letter. Have someone else in the family read it too.
  2. Confirm accents and special letters. José, Ñ, apostrophes, and hyphens are easy to drop when retyping.
  3. Check each size against your list. Make sure the toddler name is not sized for an adult shirt.
  4. Look at your file on a dark background if the shirts are dark. Dark red or green names can fade into a black shirt; a white outline helps.
  5. Make sure the background is transparent. A white box behind a name will print. Here is why a white box can show up around a design.

After your order, the gang sheet goes through a file check for resolution, transparency, and fit on the sheet length you chose, and the product page says we contact you before printing if something looks off.

Step 7: Cut and Press Each Name

Your gang sheet arrives as printed DTF film, ready for you to cut apart and press. It is not a finished shirt. A few tips for name sheets:

  • Cut around each piece with a small border. Our guide on how to cut a gang sheet into individual transfers shows how to do it without nicking the next design.
  • Label as you cut. Put each name on a sticky note or set it on the matching shirt right away.
  • Center the name before pressing. Fold the shirt in half to find the center line, and measure down from the collar the same distance on every adult shirt so names line up in the family photo.
  • Test first. The product page recommends pressing with firm, even pressure using the time and temperature for your press and fabric, and testing on a spare garment first if the fabric is new to you.

Ideas for Family Christmas Name Layouts

  • Name under a shared tree: everyone gets the same tree on the front, with their name centered underneath.
  • Role names on the back: "Head Elf," "Cookie Tester," "Gift Wrapper," with the person's name in smaller text under the role.
  • Bilingual names: "Feliz Navidad" on the front and "Abuelo," "Tía," or "Mijo" on the back.

For wording ideas, see what matching family Christmas shirts should say. Use your own family's names and designs, not team or brand logos you do not own.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I put a different name on each family member's Christmas shirt with one gang sheet?

Make one finished design for each person with their name already in it, or make one shared Christmas design plus a separate name strip for each person. Stack every piece on a single 12-inch-wide layout with about 1/4 inch between designs, label each one in your notes, and choose the sheet length that fits everything.

How big should names be on a Christmas gang sheet?

There is no single right size, but common starting points are about 9 to 11 inches wide for an adult back name, 7 to 9 inches for a youth shirt, and 5 to 6 inches for a toddler shirt. Name height usually lands between 1.5 and 3 inches. Measure a shirt your family already owns to confirm what looks right.

What sheet length do I need for a family of six?

It depends on the design sizes. Six name strips at about 10 by 2.5 inches with 1/4-inch gaps take roughly 16.25 inches, so they fit on a 12 x 24 sheet. Six full designs about 9 inches tall each take roughly 55.25 inches, so a 12 x 60 sheet would be the fit. Add up heights plus gaps before choosing.

Can I put two small names side by side on a 12-inch gang sheet?

Yes, if they are narrow enough. Two names that are each about 5.5 inches wide, with a 1/4-inch gap between them and a little room at the edges, can share one row. That works well for kids' shirts, toddler shirts, and pet bandanas.

What file should I send for a Christmas name gang sheet?

The gang sheet product page lists a transparent-background PNG at 300 DPI, sized at the final print size, as the best file. PDF, SVG, AI, EPS, JPG, and JPEG are also accepted, but JPG and JPEG cannot hold transparency, so any background in the file will print. Check spelling on every name before you upload.

How much is a Christmas gang sheet with family names?

Based on the live product page when this was written, 12-inch-wide gang sheets are $9.99 for 12 x 12, $17.99 for 12 x 24, $24.99 for 12 x 36, $31.99 for 12 x 48, $38.99 for 12 x 60, and $44.99 for 12 x 72, with longer sheets up to 12 x 240 for $129.99. Shipping is calculated at checkout. No pickup.
