How do I prepare artwork for a DTF gang sheet?

September 28, 2026LuxPort Print Co

Prep artwork as high-res files with transparent backgrounds when needed, size each design for its print area, and nest the designs tightly on the sheet so space is used well. That helps a DTF gang sheet print cleanly and gives you more usable transfers from the sheet. LuxPort Print Co specializes in custom DTF shirts, transfers, and crew packs for San Antonio customers and online orders.

Start with a clean file

Use the highest-resolution artwork available. PNG files are often useful for designs that need a transparent background, while vector artwork can be helpful for logos, text, and shapes that may need to stay sharp at different sizes. Before uploading, check that the artwork is not blurry, accidentally flattened onto a solid background, or surrounded by extra space that affects the intended print size.

Transparent backgrounds matter when you want only the design printed on the garment or transfer. If a background is part of the design, keep it intentionally rather than assuming it will disappear during printing.

Choose the finished size

Decide how large each design should be on the shirt, transfer, or other item before placing it on a gang sheet. Measure the available print area and consider whether the design is for a left chest, full front, back, sleeve, pocket, or another location. A file that looks correct on a computer screen may be too large or too small once it is pressed, so sizing should be based on the final print area.

For crew shirts, prepare separate files or clearly labeled versions when logos, names, numbers, or placement sizes change. Keeping those details organized helps reduce confusion during proofing and production.

Nest designs tightly

Gang sheet artwork should be arranged to use the sheet efficiently without crowding the designs. Place designs close enough to reduce unused film, but leave enough separation for cutting and handling. Rotate compatible designs when that helps fill open areas. Small logos and repeated names can often fit around larger front or back prints, while large designs will naturally use more of the sheet.

Do not stretch artwork to fill empty space. Keep proportions locked so logos and lettering do not become distorted. If you are unsure how to arrange mixed sizes, upload the artwork and explain the intended finished dimensions. LuxPort can review the layout as part of the digital proof process.

Label versions clearly

When a sheet includes several designs, use clear filenames or notes such as “left chest,” “full back,” “12-inch front,” or “name set.” For multiple copies, indicate the quantity needed for each design. This is especially useful for contractor crews, events, uniforms, and batch transfers where several people may share one order.

Review before approval

Upload your artwork online with the desired sizes, quantities, and placement notes. LuxPort provides a free digital proof so you can review the arrangement before anything is printed. Check spelling, colors, orientation, design size, and the number of copies. Approve the proof only when the layout matches what you want printed.
