A military or veteran memorial shirt usually shows the veteran's name, the branch they served in, their years of service or their birth and passing years, a favorite photo (often in uniform), and a short line of honor such as Rest Easy, Gone But Never Forgotten, or Forever Our Hero. The best shirts are simple, accurate, and personal, so the family, fellow veterans, and friends all feel the tribute when they wear it to the funeral, the graveside service, or a gathering later.
San Antonio is Military City USA, and many families here have said goodbye to a parent, grandparent, spouse, or friend who served. If your family is planning a service now, we are sorry for your loss. This guide is meant to take one small task off your plate. It covers wording ideas for each branch, what to include and what to double check, how to handle emblems and flags, and how to plan shirts for everyone who wants one.

Most veteran memorial shirts are built from four parts. You can use all of them or just one or two:
- The name. Full name, a nickname the family used, or both, such as Sgt. Robert "Bobby" Garza.
- The service. The branch, and if the family wants, rank and years of service, such as U.S. Army Veteran, 1968 to 1972.
- The dates. Birth and passing years or full dates. Our post on whether memorial shirts should show full dates or just the years can help you decide.
- A short line of honor. A few words that sum up how the family remembers them.
Short lines that fit any branch
- Gone But Never Forgotten
- Forever Our Hero
- Rest Easy
- Thank You for Your Service
- Duty, Honor, Family
- All Gave Some, Some Gave All
- Mission Complete
- Home at Last
Lines families often choose by branch
- Army: Rest Easy, Soldier; This We'll Defend; Once a Soldier, Always a Soldier.
- Navy: Fair Winds and Following Seas; Anchors Aweigh; Sailor, Rest Your Oar.
- Marine Corps: Semper Fi; Once a Marine, Always a Marine; Rest Easy, Devil Dog.
- Air Force: Aim High; Final Flight; Blue Skies and Tailwinds.
- Coast Guard: Semper Paratus; Always Ready, Now at Rest.
- Space Force: Semper Supra; Always Above.
Phrases like these are words that veterans and families use every day, and they are a natural fit. Pick the one the veteran actually said or loved. If they always signed off a phone call with Semper Fi, that line will mean more than any other.
Lines for a parent, spouse, or grandparent who served
Many shirts honor both the service and the family role. A few examples: My Dad, My Hero, U.S. Army Veteran; Grandpa, Marine, Legend; Forever Our Sailor, Forever Our Dad; Loving Wife, Mother, and Air Force Veteran. For more wording by family role, see our guides on what a memorial shirt for a mom or dad should say and what a memorial shirt for a grandma or grandpa should say.
Lines in Spanish
Many San Antonio military families prefer Spanish or a mix of both languages, such as Siempre Nuestro Héroe, Descansa en Paz, Soldado, or En Memoria de Nuestro Papá, Veterano del Ejército. Our post on what memorial shirts can say in Spanish has many more options.
What about branch emblems, seals, and insignia?
This is the question families ask most. The official seals, emblems, and insignia of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Space Force, and Coast Guard are protected marks, and the military branches license their use. Because of that, we do not print official emblems, unit patches, or seals without the proper permission.
The good news is that a veteran memorial shirt does not need an emblem to look powerful and clearly military. Respectful options that work well include:
- The branch name in strong block letters, such as U.S. ARMY VETERAN or UNITED STATES MARINE.
- The American flag or Texas flag, either full or as a subtle background.
- Dog tags with the name, years, and branch written on them.
- A folded flag, stars, or a simple set of boots and helmet drawn in an original style.
- The veteran's own photo in uniform, which is often the most meaningful image of all.
Please stick with your own photos and original artwork. Our post on memorial shirt design ideas and tips has more layout ideas that keep the focus on the person.
Choosing the right photo
Many families pick two photos: one in uniform from their service years and one from later in life with family. You can put the uniform photo on the back and a smaller photo or heart on the front, or place both side by side. A few tips:
- Choose a photo where the face is clear, in focus, and well lit.
- Send the original phone file, not a screenshot from social media.
- Old service photos are often printed prints in a frame or album. A careful scan works much better than a quick phone snapshot of the print. Our guide on scanning an old printed photo for a memorial shirt walks through it step by step.
- Black and white service photos look striking on black, charcoal, or white shirts.

Fellow veterans notice details. A wrong rank abbreviation or a misspelled unit can bother people at a service, so take a few minutes to confirm:
- Spelling of the name and nickname. Ask one more relative to read it.
- Rank and its abbreviation. Each branch writes ranks a little differently, so copy it from the veteran's papers, such as a discharge form, or ask someone who served with them.
- Years of service and dates. Make sure the years match what the family has on record.
- The branch name. Write it the way the veteran would, for example U.S. Marine Corps, not just Marines, if the family prefers the formal version.
LuxPort Print Co sends a proof to review before anything is printed, so you can catch these details and share the proof with family first.
Front, back, or both?
A popular layout for a military funeral is a small flag, heart, or the veteran's name on the front left chest, with the large photo, branch, years, and line of honor on the back. It looks dignified during the service and is easy to see in group photos at the graveside. A full front design also works well, especially for a celebration of life or a memorial ride. If the family wants a memorial ride, our post on what a motorcycle memorial ride shirt should say has ideas for back prints that read well from a distance.
Shirts for family, fellow veterans, and friends
A veteran's life often touches several circles of people: family, church, coworkers, and the men and women they served with. You can keep one design for everyone or make small changes for each group, such as Grandpa's Crew for the grandkids or a unit nickname for the veterans who served with them. Collecting sizes early keeps things calm during a busy week. Our guides on ordering memorial shirts for a large group and ordering more memorial shirts weeks after the service explain how families handle sizes and late orders.
Remembering them on Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and other dates
Many families order a second set of shirts later on, for Memorial Day, Veterans Day, a heavenly birthday, or the anniversary of the passing. A Veterans Day shirt might say Proud Family of a U.S. Navy Veteran, while a Memorial Day shirt might use the photo with the words Never Forgotten. Saving the design means you can reorder without starting over. Read what a heavenly birthday or death anniversary memorial shirt should say for more ideas. For first responders who also served, our post on firefighter and police memorial shirts may help as well.

Frequently asked questions
What do you put on a veteran memorial shirt?
Most families use the veteran's name and rank if they want it, the branch they served in, their years of service or their birth and passing years, and a short line such as Gone But Never Forgotten, Rest Easy, or Forever Our Hero. A clear photo, often one in uniform, is a common centerpiece.
Can a memorial shirt use the official Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Space Force, or Coast Guard emblem?
Official military seals, emblems, and insignia are protected marks, so we do not print them without the right permission. Most families get a strong, respectful look with the branch name in bold letters, the American or Texas flag, dog tags, stars, or a folded flag, plus the veteran's own photo.
What is a short saying for a military memorial shirt?
Short lines read best. Families often choose Rest Easy, Soldier; Fair Winds and Following Seas for Navy veterans; Semper Fi, Brother; Forever Our Hero; Some Gave All; Duty, Honor, Family; or All Gave Some, Some Gave All. Two to six words is usually enough.
Should the shirt show rank and years of service?
Only if the family wants it. Rank and service years are a proud detail for many veterans, but some families prefer just the name and branch. Double check spelling, rank abbreviations, and dates with a close relative or the veteran's papers before you approve the proof.
What color shirt works for a military funeral or memorial?
Black, navy, charcoal, and white are the most common for a funeral or graveside service. For a celebration of life, Memorial Day gathering, or memorial ride, families sometimes choose the veteran's favorite color or a red, white, and blue design.
