To export a Canva design for T-shirt printing, build it on a custom canvas sized in pixels for the real print size (about 300 pixels per inch, such as 3300 by 3600 pixels for an 11 by 12 inch front print), remove the page background, then go to Share, Download, choose PNG at the largest size, and turn on Transparent background if your Canva plan includes it. PDF Print is a good backup for text and logo designs. Before you order, zoom in to check edges and small text, and keep separate files for the front and the back.
Canva is where a lot of shirt ideas start: a family reunion logo, a cruise group saying, a church event graphic, a small business name with a simple icon. It is easy to make something that looks great on a laptop screen. The trouble starts when that same design has to print on fabric at full size. A default download can be too small, a white page background can turn into a printed box, and thin script text that looked elegant on screen can blur on a shirt.
This guide walks through exactly how to set up and download a Canva design so it is ready for a printed custom T-shirt, plus what to check before you place a LuxPort order. If you are building a DTF gang sheet in Canva instead of ordering finished shirts, read our separate guide on making a DTF gang sheet in Canva, which covers sheet layout and spacing.
Why a Canva Design Can Look Different on a Shirt
Canva is built for screens first. Social posts, flyers, and slides only need enough pixels to look sharp on a phone or monitor. A shirt print is physical. A design that will be 11 inches wide on the chest needs far more pixel detail than a 1080-pixel social post, or it will look soft when it prints.
Three other differences catch people off guard:
- The page background prints. Canva starts most designs on a white page. If that white stays in the file, it can print as a white rectangle, which is very obvious on a Black, Navy, or Red shirt. Our post on why a white box shows up around a design on a black shirt explains this in detail.
- The shirt becomes the background. Dark text that looked fine on a white Canva page can disappear on a dark shirt.
- Screens glow, fabric does not. Bright on-screen colors can look a little different printed; see why print colors look different from your screen.
Step 1: Start With the Right Canvas Size
The single most important step happens before you add anything: choose the size of the design. In Canva, select Create a design, then Custom size, and enter the dimensions in pixels. Do not start from an Instagram post or a flyer template and stretch it later; a small design cannot gain real detail when it is enlarged.
The 300 pixels per inch rule
Printers commonly plan artwork at about 300 pixels per inch of final print size. To find your canvas size, multiply the planned print width and height in inches by 300. Our post on what resolution artwork should be for T-shirt printing explains the reasoning; here is how it works out for common shirt placements:
- Full front design planned at about 11 by 12 inches: roughly 3300 by 3600 pixels.
- Wide back design planned at about 12 by 14 inches: roughly 3600 by 4200 pixels.
- Left-chest logo planned at about 4 by 4 inches: roughly 1200 by 1200 pixels.
- Long name or phrase across the chest, about 11 by 4 inches: roughly 3300 by 1200 pixels.
These are planning sizes, not fixed rules. The final print size is set on your proof, and it can be adjusted so the design fits every size in a group from S to 3XL; see how print placement changes across smaller and larger shirt sizes. If you are not sure how big the print should be, it is safer to design larger than smaller.
Match the canvas shape to the design
Make the canvas close to the shape of the artwork itself. A tall canvas with a short phrase in the middle wastes space and makes placement harder to judge. If your design is a wide line of text, use a wide canvas. If it is a round logo, use a square one.
Step 2: Design With the Shirt Color in Mind
When this post was published, LuxPort's live custom T-shirt colors were White, Black, Gray, Navy, and Red, in adult sizes S through 3XL. A simple trick in Canva: while you design, temporarily set the page background to the shirt color you plan to order. Your design will look closer to the real shirt. Just remember to remove that background before you download (Step 3).
- On Black or Navy shirts: white, light gray, or bright colors read best. Avoid black or dark navy text.
- On White shirts: black, navy, red, and other dark colors read best. Pale yellow or light gray can fade into the shirt.
- On Gray shirts: mid-tones blend in; lean on black or white for text.
- On Red shirts: white usually reads well; dark red or pink text tends to blend.
For one-color designs, our post on printing just white on a black shirt or just black on a white shirt covers how simple designs can look sharp. For logo color choices, see what shirt colors make a logo stand out.
Keep text bold enough to print
Canva's script and hairline fonts can look beautiful at full zoom and fall apart at shirt size. As a rule of thumb, avoid strokes that are thinner than a pencil line when you view the design at its real print size. Our guides on printing small text on a T-shirt and how DTF printing handles small text and fine lines go deeper.
Use high-resolution photos inside the design
If your Canva design includes a photo, the photo's own resolution matters. A small image pulled from a text message or social media can look soft even on a large canvas. Upload the original photo file to Canva whenever possible. For photo-heavy designs, read how DTF printing handles photos, gradients, and detailed artwork.
Step 3: Remove the Page Background
Before downloading, select the page background and delete it, or set it to white if it currently shows another color. Then decide how you will handle transparency, because this is where Canva plans differ.
If you have a paid Canva plan
Canva's help center lists the Transparent background download option for paid plans such as Canva Pro, Teams, Education, and Nonprofits. With that option on, everything that is not part of your artwork downloads as transparent, so only the design itself prints on the shirt.
If you do not have a paid Canva plan
You can still send a usable file. Download a PNG on a plain, solid background, and tell us which areas should not print when you send the artwork. We review design details with you before anything prints, so a stray background shows up on the proof instead of on your shirts. If your design is built around a phone photo, our guide to removing the background from a phone photo walks through the options. For the full background explanation, see do I need a transparent background for shirt printing.
Step 4: Download the Right File Type
In Canva, go to Share, then Download, and pick a file type. LuxPort's custom tee lists artwork as PNG, JPG, or PDF files up to 25MB each. Here is how each Canva option fits a shirt order:
- PNG (best choice for most shirts): keeps crisp edges and supports transparency. Choose the largest size available and avoid compressed or size-limited downloads.
- PDF Print (good backup): Canva lists PDF Print at 300 dpi. It works well for text and logo designs. Leave crop marks and bleed off, since a shirt print does not need them.
- JPG (only for full-rectangle designs): JPG cannot be transparent, so the background always prints. Use it only if you actually want a solid rectangle, like a framed photo design.
- PDF Standard and SVG: Canva lists PDF Standard at 96 dpi, which is screen quality. SVG is not on the custom tee's list of accepted files, so send a PNG or PDF Print instead.
For a general comparison of formats outside of Canva, see what file format is best for T-shirt printing.
Size and quality settings
On paid plans, Canva shows a Size slider for PNG downloads. Leave it at 1x if your canvas is already sized for print (Step 1), or raise it if you started small. Keep in mind that raising the slider adds pixels but cannot add detail to a low-resolution photo inside the design. If a large PNG goes over 25MB, try PDF Print, or contact us with the file before ordering.
Step 5: Front, Back, and Sleeve Files
If your shirt has a front and a back print, create one Canva design with separate pages, each sized for its own placement. Download each page as its own file and name the files clearly, such as reunion-front.png and reunion-back.png. Clear names prevent mix-ups between a left-chest logo and a large back design.
For left-chest logos, keep the artwork simple and on its own small canvas. Our guide on where a left-chest logo should be placed covers the placement side.
Step 6: Check the File Before You Order
Open the downloaded file on your computer, not in Canva, and zoom in to 100 percent or more. Look for:
- Edges: are letters and shapes crisp, or fuzzy and jagged?
- Leftover background: any white or colored rectangle around the design?
- Faint halos: light outlines around elements that were cut out of photos.
- Spelling: every name, date, and phone number, letter by letter.
- Tiny details: anything thinner than a pencil line at real size.
- Empty space: extra transparent space around the design, which can make it print smaller than you expect.
If the logo you used came from an old screenshot and looks blurry, read whether a low-resolution logo can be fixed for printing before you order.
Step 7: Upload, Approve the Proof, and Save the File
Upload your file on the custom T-shirt page, or use design your own if you would rather describe the idea. If the order page does not show a file-upload control, contact us with your artwork before ordering. Send the downloaded file rather than a Canva share link, so the exact version you approved is the one we work from.
A proof is part of every LuxPort order, and production begins after you approve it. Check the print size, placement, colors, and spelling one more time; our proof checklist walks through it. After the order, keep the final Canva design and the downloaded files in a folder you can find later, so a reorder of the same shirts matches the first batch.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best way to download a Canva design for a T-shirt?
Download it as a PNG at the largest size your plan allows, with Transparent background turned on if you have a paid Canva plan. PDF Print, which Canva lists at 300 dpi, is a good second choice for text and logo designs. LuxPort's custom tee accepts PNG, JPG, or PDF files up to 25MB each.
What size should my Canva design be for a shirt?
Set up a custom size in pixels before you start designing, based on how big the print will be on the shirt. Multiply the print width and height in inches by 300. A design planned at 11 by 12 inches is about 3300 by 3600 pixels; a left-chest logo planned at 4 by 4 inches is about 1200 by 1200 pixels. Your proof shows the final print size.
Can I get a transparent background in Canva without paying?
Canva's help center lists transparent PNG downloads as a feature of its paid plans, such as Canva Pro and Teams. Without one, download a PNG on a plain solid background and say so when you send the file, or see our guide to removing a background before ordering. We review design details with you before anything prints.
Why does my Canva design look blurry on a shirt proof?
Usually the canvas was too small, a photo inside the design was low resolution, or the file was compressed during download. Rebuild the design on a larger pixel canvas, replace small images with the original high-resolution files, and avoid compressed or size-limited downloads.
Should I send a Canva share link or the downloaded file?
Send the downloaded file. A file captures the exact version you approved, and LuxPort's custom tee lists PNG, JPG, or PDF artwork. If the order page does not show an upload control, contact us with the file before ordering.
How do I set up a front and back design in Canva?
Use one design with two pages, one for the front and one for the back, both at their own planned print size. Download each page as its own file and name them clearly, such as front.png and back.png, so there is no confusion about which art goes where.
Can I use Canva templates and graphics on shirts I plan to sell?
Canva's license terms set the rules for templates, fonts, and stock elements, and those rules can differ for products you sell. If the shirts are for resale, read Canva's current license terms or use artwork you own outright. For personal, family, team, or business uniform shirts, the main job is getting a clean, high-resolution file.
